    What Is Aerial Yoga?

Nowadays, there are thousands of ways to get fit, all offering different benefits and results depending on your personal fitness goals. From viral TikTok trends to traditional weight training and cardio workouts, there are also more specialised forms of exercise, such as aerial yoga, which can improve flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination.

Aerial yoga, the focus of this article, has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is inspired by the traditional 5,000-year-old practice of yoga—but with a twist: it defies gravity.

As aerial yoga continues to establish itself as a popular wellness activity, many people wonder: what exactly is it, what are its benefits, and how can beginners get started?

Aerial yoga is exactly what the name suggests: yoga in the air. Don’t worry—you do not need any special flying abilities to take part. The “floating” aspect comes from special fabrics or hammocks suspended from the ceiling, similar to those used in aerial acrobatics.

Jo-Leigh Morris, yoga, pilates and barre instructor and coach at WithU and Mvmnt, explains:

“The fabrics are used to support your physical yoga postures, also known as asanas. They help with balance and alignment, and allow you to move more deeply into the poses.”

By combining traditional yoga with the support of the hammock, aerial yoga offers a playful and accessible way to build strength, increase flexibility, and experience movement from an entirely new perspective.
